As new students gradually filtered in from all over Japan, it became clear that we would need to house them in dormitories. With a succession of construction projects, I had lots to think about. With a stroke of luck, we were able to borrow an ideal old school building of about 90 tsubo(297.52m²) which was moved to the campus by Mr. Terawaki of Furui Village. The students in the dormitory began to live and dine together. As there was no maid, cook, or caretaker, they were forced to do everything for themselves. In both summer and winter, they cooked their meals at four o’ clock in the morning; and, after school until seven o’clock in the evening, they tidied up the house and prepared breakfast for the next day.

They did a remarkable job, in fact, more splendid than anything we could have expected. Wearing headbands for cleaning both morning and night, all of them worked briskly and efficiently. The floors were always gleaming.

In a spirit of courtesy and self-improvement, they also devoted themselves to the pursuit of their academic life. This was a result of our chief director’s military-style discipline and leadership.
