At this point, we established a plan to commence with the women’s technical college. The Chief Director declared, “We might be two or three years ahead of ourselves,” but I pushed him and we got to work on it. However, the people in the central government were not understanding and were unwilling to put any faith in Anjo Town.

At that time, across Japan, there were nine public and private women’s technical colleges mainly for homemaking and sewing, but only in big cities. We had no such schools in small towns. The government said that we could not have new students enter a women’s technical college situated in rural Anjo and turned us down.

But we weren’t about to give in just yet. Patiently, but persistently, we stressed how our technical college was a necessity in a pastoral region, one which would exhibit the close relationship between agriculture and housework. After about two years had passed, they finally came around.

This is how we gained permission to establish the women’s technical college enhanced by the inclusion of agriculture in the curriculum. As we entered into this arrangement, we welcomed Mr. Nobukichi Yamazaki as school principal.

At first, in order to organize an incorporated foundation, we needed around 50,000 yen in cash as additional funding for school facilities and general equipment. After several successive years of construction, we didn’t have even 10,000 yen on hand, let alone 50,000. As the chief director had said, from a financial perspective it was an impossible task.

However we could easily have missed a chance if we had just sat on our hands. Thus with determination and great effort, racking our brains over this apparent impossibility, I succeeded in coming up with the 50,000 yen in a very short time. So we realized our goal of entering into our long hoped for arrangement.
