That was my state of mind at that moment. It was at the house of the Baron in Hongō that I was suddenly struck by an idea that reminded me of the time I was struggling to pay for my schooling in Tokyo and was taken in so hospitably by friends. It was the story of my trying to come up with the tuition by disguising myself as a rickshaw man and then being discovered which led fatefully to my opportunity to support myself by doing the tailoring, laundry, and housework for the Baron’s family. Even after returning to my home town, when I go to Tokyo to attend the summer semester, I always stop to pay my respects at the house of the Baron.

I thought it rather forward, but there was nothing else I could do. The first thing I did was go to Tokyo where I was met by the lady of the Baron’s house. Her husband was not home, but she asked me to tell her the reason for calling as he would be back soon. After returning and being informed of the details by his wife, the Baron immediately offered me a check for 50,000 yen and proclaimed, “I’m donating this money to Anjo Women’s Technical College Incorporated Foundation. Please submit it with the necessary documents as soon as possible.” You can’t imagine how moved I was at this moment.

Upon arriving back at the school, I joyfully informed Principal Yamazaki who, staring at me wide-eyed, exclaimed, “There are other great men in Tokyo. Even though they are in the same city, why doesn’t the Ministry of Education take any action? Theirs was such a shameful decision that I think they should pause and reconsider. I will get the permit of Anjo Women’s Technical College immediately. So, let’s ask Prince Takamatsunomiya, His Highness, to visit our school to do the inspection as soon as possible.” We thereupon began to go ahead with preparations for his visit. This invitation, as well as an agricultural study tour, is what led Prince Takamatsunomiya, His Majesty, to come to Anjo in November of 1929(Shōwa 4).
