As mentioned earlier, it was 1947(Shōwa 22) when I was dismissed from the teaching profession and from then on, I was typically not involved in school affairs, leaving everything to the people in charge. However, they all said that it was impossible to change our school into a junior college. This time I was determined to stand up and to fight through any difficulties to establish the junior college. I came up with an idea, but I would need to rely on the strength of others.

In those days, my second daughter’s father-in-law, Dr. Seiichi Sugihara, had been appointed chairman of the Miyazaki University agricultural faculty, so I called upon him to offer him key positions. He replied that he would like to be chief director as well as president. We had a family council immediately and reported to Dr. Sugihara that there was agreement on his being the president, but not on his taking over as chief director.

As an alternative candidate, Dr. Sugihara recommended his acquaintance, Dr. Bungo Miyazawa, also of the Miyazaki University agricultural faculty, as our first president. So, it happened that we welcomed Dr. Miyazawa and opened the doors of the junior college in 1950(Shōwa 25). However, at that time, our school was in a terribly difficult and bewildering state, which defied both internal and external solutions, and we imagined that President Miyazawa must have been under indescribable pressure.
